Finance for Non-Finance Managers: Reading the Three Statements

Finance for Non-Finance Managers: Reading the Three Statements

Department heads are asked to own a budget and defend a business case without ever being taught how the numbers connect. This session walks through the profit and loss, balance sheet and cash flow statement as one linked system, using a single simplified company so you can see how an operational decision lands in each statement.

  • By the end of the program, participants will be able to:

    • Read a profit and loss statement, balance sheet and cash flow statement and explain what each one answers
    • Trace how one operational decision (a bulk purchase, a hire, a late-paying customer) flows through all three
    • Interpret the six ratios most often used in management reporting
    • Distinguish profit from cash and explain why a profitable department can still be a cash problem

This program is organized by the Academy of Professionals Malaysia (APM).

Features:

  • The three statements and the question each one answers (10 min)
  • The link between them: how net profit reaches the balance sheet (10 min)
  • Worked example: one company, four decisions, tracked through the statements (15 min)
  • Six ratios that matter to a non-finance manager (10 min)
  • Profit vs cash: the working capital trap + Q&A (15 min)

    • A one-page 'three statements' map showing how the numbers connect
    • A six-ratio quick reference card with benchmark ranges
    • A simple template for pressure-testing your own departmental budget
